To the west of the city lies Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, home to wildlife including lions, rhinoceros, giraffes and leopards.
What you can do while in Dar es salaam
Our secondary office is located in Dar es Salaam, the country’s largest city and commercial port on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast and a short flight from Zanzibar. However, we are open to the discussion to accommodate at your preferred place.
How would a Volunteer placement work?
Time Commitment
The amount of time you can commit as a volunteer depends on you. We have had volunteers come for as little as four weeks up to one year. The project and work schedule for each volunteer would be structured based on your availability.
Visa and Permits
You will enter the country under a business visa which you can obtain in advance or at the point of entry into the country at a cost of $250. Anza will provide an invitation letter to enable you to secure this visa.
Offices
We have two offices in Tanzania, one in Arusha and one in Dar es Salaam. Our primary office and co-working space is located in Arusha in northern Tanzania
Our secondary office is located in Dar es Salaam, the country’s largest city and commercial port on Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast and a short flight from Zanzibar.
Accomodation
Anza will find suitable and safe accommodation for you in the form of a short stay apartment or home unit which will be arranged in advance of your arrival. Airport Pickup
We will meet you at your arrival airport, generally Kilimanjaro International Airport for Arusha or Julius Nyerere International Airport for Dar es Salaam, and provide transportation to your local accommodation. We will ensure that you are coordinated with a local phone SIM for your mobile/cell phone and that your initial arrival needs are addressed.

Both public transportation and private taxis, including app based options, are available throughout the city for your needs. We don’t require or recommend that you hire a rental car during your assignment with Anza, however we will be happy to connect you to providers of such services.

Anza will provide you with all necessary support and information in advance and during your volunteer placement in Tanzania. We are proud to have hosted many international professionals from Europe and North America and each has played a role in the development and expansion of the mission of Anza. Post Placement Engagement
Many of our past volunteers have opted to stay engaged with Anza following the completion of their volunteer placement. We welcome this and the opportunity for ongoing virtual support and mentorship of our team members.
Here are some Frequent asked Questions
I would like to volunteer in Tanzania but don't have anyone to come with me. Is it possible to come alone?
Many of our volunteers come alone. We work as a team at Anza and we are happy to provide advice and to answer any questions you have about local customs and culture, recommendations for cafes and restaurants as well as sightseeing options in Tanzania. Arusha and Dar es Salaam welcome visitors from all around the world and social media will help you connect you with other volunteers and visitors who are spending time in the city where you will be working.
How long is the normal work day for a volunteer/ intern? What time does the day start/ end?
Our volunteers work five days a week with our working hours being 9:00am – 5:30pm and one hour for lunchtime. Your weekend is free to relax and to visit everything that Tanzania has to offer.
What if I get sick during my stay?
Our team will always take you to the best available healthcare immediately. In both Arusha and Dar es Salaam there are quality doctors, medical care and hospitals available. We do require that you obtain travel medical insurance coverage in place to address any medical needs, including should you require medical assistance that is not available in Tanzania.
I would like to combine a volunteer placement with a Mt. Kilimanjaro trek, safari or beach holiday to Zanzibar.
Yes absolutely! Many volunteers combine their placement with a Mt. Kilimanjaro trek, a safari in one of the many National Parks or a beach holiday at Pagani or Zanzibar. We recommend and encourage such trips at the end of your placement period. You can also complete a short safari to some National Parks over the course of a weekend.
Based on my experience and skill set, I am not sure if I am a good match for a volunteer placement based on the areas of interest that Anza is seeking?
We understand that completing a volunteer placement is a big commitment. We ask that you complete the expression of interest form and a representative of Anza will get in touch with you to discuss all the options that are available to see if a placement with Anza would be the right fit for you.
I am worried about my personal safety in Tanzania. How safe is it?
Both cities of Arusha and Dar es Salaam are relatively safe according to African standards. During daytime it is safe to explore the town by foot. We do advise that after dark that you should not walk alone and instead take a taxi using an app based provider. We recommend not to carry valuables and large amounts of money with you during daytime, similar to how you would travel to protect your personal safety in many parts of the world.
Do European/North American SIM cards function in Tanzania?
Many European/North American SIM cards function in Tanzania, however this is something you would need to confirm with your telecom provider in advance of arriving in Tanzania. We strongly recommend that you obtain a local SIM for your mobile/cell phone and an Anza representative will assist you with local SIM registration on your first day of your placement.
Is there a risk for malaria in Tanzania? What about other vaccinations? How should I prepare?
Malaria is a common problem in Tanzania and we strongly recommend that you take precautions to avoid contracting the disease and getting ill. In advance of your visit, we strongly recommend that you obtain a prophylaxis to avoid contracting malaria. We also strongly recommend that you visit your doctor or a medical travel clinic to get any other vaccinations that are determined to be needed for a visit to the country.
