Capacity Building for Entrepreneurship and Aquaculture Practices
Introduction
In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Aquacom as the technical partner, Anza Entrepreneurs successfully implemented a transformative capacity building program in Mtwara. The initiative aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship and aquaculture practices among women and youth. It equipped 120 participants with the skills, tools, and confidence needed to establish and manage sustainable aquaculture enterprises, driving both economic empowerment and community development in the region.
Our Approach
The program began with a needs assessment involving leaders from ten community groups in Mtwara, revealing challenges such as limited knowledge in financial management, marketing, record-keeping, and no prior exposure to aquaculture. Based on these findings, a practical, relevant curriculum was designed. The program included interactive workshops and hands-on training in Swahili, covering business creation, financial literacy, compliance, and aquaculture techniques like pond design, water quality monitoring, and fish health management. This integrated approach empowered participants to establish and manage sustainable aquaculture ventures.
Target Impact
The program achieved several key outcomes, including the empowerment of women and youth, with the majority of participants being women and young people who, despite having no prior experience in aquaculture, gained the practical skills and confidence to launch and manage their own businesses. Participants also showed improved financial literacy and record-keeping, which positioned them to access funding and investment opportunities critical for sustaining and growing their businesses. The program fostered collaboration and peer support, with group leaders and local extension officers trained as facilitators, ensuring that knowledge would be shared within the community through a train-the-trainer approach.
